The Center for Restorative Justice of the Autonomous Region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol was established in 2004. At first its activity was mediation in the field of justice of peace, but it soon extended to the field of juvenile criminal proceedings and probation for adults.

The Center is located in Trento and in Bozen and offers criminal mediation activities and the construction of restorative justice paths in juvenile criminal proceedings, in criminal proceedings before the Justice of Peace, in probation for adult defendants, in criminal execution on the basis of requests from the judicial authorities and social services of the Department of Juvenile and Community Justice.

In addition to this, the Center aims to develop the use of restorative practices more widely in society, even when no offence has (yet) occurred, and to promote initiatives for the development of a culture of dialogue.

In the criminal field, if a complaint has already been filed or a proceeding has already been set up, the service can be accessed:

• in the case of juvenile criminal proceedings, through a request from the social services for minors or the public prosecutor;
• in the case of proceedings before the Justice of Peace, upon request from the judge;
• in the case of criminal proceedings against an adult defendant for whom probation has been ordered, on request from the office in charge of non-custodial sentences;
• in any other case, upon  request of the person concerned or his lawyer or on the suggestion of the police.

For all other non-criminal situations of conflict (neighborhood, family, et cetera), thanks to the protocol agreement with the Public Prosecutor's Office and the close collaboration with the local law enforcement agencies, the center can operate under direct request of citizens to support people who want to try dialogue as a possible solution to the problems that concern them.
